All About Azelaic Acid

Innovative Option in the Treatment of Acne

Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring acid, which was first used successfully in the treatment of skin pigmentation disorders. The discovery that azelaic acid is also effective against acne was made by chance: It was observed that patients with pigmentation disorders and a coexisting acne showed an improvement in both their pigmentation disorder and their acne during treatment with topical azelaic acid.

Azelaic acid is unique with its triple mode of action in acne:

  • Antibacterial , by reducing the growth of the bacteria involved, Propionibacterium acnes
  • Anticomedonic, inhibiting the formation of comedones
  • Anti-inflammatory , by reducing the free radicals which play an important role in inflammation

Azelaic acid—available as a cream or gel:

  • Mild, and moisturizing—meaning it is gentle on the skin and easily absorbed
  • Well-tolerated
  • shows fewer side effects than benzoyl peroxide (BPO) 5% gel
  • can be safely used during pregnancy and lactation
  • does not bleach hair and clothes
  • no whitening (no white, spotty skin appearance after applying to one spot only)
  • Displays superior safety that allows for long-term treatment and maintenance therapy
  • Is suitable for combination with other topical therapies in moderate acne, and with systemic medication in moderate to severe forms of acne
  • Is successfully used in more than 60 countries worldwide.
